BATTALION HEADQUARTERS

128th Battalion Headquarters Flag

FOREWARD

Battalion Headquarters was the nucleus of the 128th Armored Ordnance Maintenance Battalion, around which Headquarters Company and the three letter companies revolved in their orbits as the whole moved across France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany with the rest of the Sixth Armored Division.

In this part of the battalion history will be found much about the "brass" of the organization, which the authors believe is as it should be, for it was in Battalion Headquarters, the "brains" of the battalion, that higher officers and the greatest number of officers worked, struggled for the few comforts available in war, and above all, strove to remain alive. Here, they accomplished their commendable feats, along with the enlisted men, made their mistakes with them, experienced their fears, got into exciting and ridiculous situations and managed to pull through somehow or other.

While the letter and Headquarters companies of the battalion nearly always operated as units in the field -- all members and parts of each company bivouacked together in the same company area -- it was different with Battalion Headquarters whose function was to coordinate and direct the operations of the four companies into one continous battalion Ordnance job for the support of the division. Instead of being together, sections of Battalion Headquarters were scattered all over the division area, from rear to the very front. But the main body nearly always was to be found in a central location from which the efforts of the working companies could be correlated, the companies administered and furnished necessary parts and equipment.
