FROM THE DIRECTOR:

Update on Summer Workshops and Plans for 2008/2009

Unfortunately funds for offering workshops have run out early this year (2007/2008) since we had to deal with a reduction in our training grant funds.  I’m very sorry about this.  Right now I’m working on the budgets for next year, which begins October 1st.

As I mentioned on the blog and in the summer workshop schedule, our upcoming 20th anniversary year (2008-2009) will be a “back to basics” year.  This comes due to the new rule that 50% of the State Cooperative Grant money and 50% of all local funds for Florida's six Multitype Library Cooperatives (MLCs) be spent on bibliographic enhancement activities.   A 40% cut in State Cooperative grant funding for 2008/2009 further complicates matters.  The level of federal funding (LSTA) is almost the same as the 2007/2008 funding.  I know that everyone is facing tough budget times

Combining the change in emphasis to bibliographic enhancement with less funding, training offerings will probably reduce in both number and scope in the new fiscal year.  As always, CFLC strives to furnish quality training to librarians, staff, and patrons.   I’ll keep you posted as plans for the new year become clearer.

As we all face tough budget times, I am reminded of the last line of Robert Fulghum’s All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

“When you go out into the street, hold hands and stick together”

Together we can make it through these rough times; we have a lot of talent right in our back yard that we can tap to learn from each other.
