Coordinator for Library Access Services

Anticipated Start Date: October 2008

Location: Central Florida Community College Learning Resources Center, Ocala, Florida

Description of Duties: Supervise Library Access Services area employees and functions. Support the instructional program by assisting students, faculty and staff in the use of the library, including reference service and library instruction, both on-site and online.

Educational Requirements: ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science required.

Years of Experience in the Field: Minimum of two years of professional experience in a learning resource center or library facility required. Additionally, one year of supervisory or management experience preferred. Experience using an automated library management system is required, including familiarity with electronic databases, integrated automation systems and the Internet.

Florida Institute of Technology Evans Library

Catalog and Electronic Resources Librarian

The Evans Library of Florida Institute of Technology (www.lib.fit.edu) invites applications for the position of Catalog and Electronic Resources Librarian from professionals who enjoy cataloging and who have experience in providing access to electronic resources.  This is a new position added in response to the library needs of a growing number of online students. The Catalog and Electronic Resources Librarian will work with Evans Library colleagues to provide access to both digital and physical materials. 

Responsibilities: Florida Institute of Technology, an accredited, nationally recognized university, offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in many fields and continues to expand its online learning programs. Students and faculty in these programs, regardless of their geographic location, require access to all of the Libraryʼs resources. The Catalog and Electronic Resources Librarian will be primarily responsible for providing catalog records for all types of materials to support these programs with emphasis on electronic and digital resources.  S/he will help determine the best methods and policies for making electronic resources accessible through the Libraryʼs online catalog.  S/he will assist in the planning and implementation of local digitization projects.  S/he will keep abreast of the rapidly changing areas of metadata, digitization, and bibliographic control and assist in their implementation within the Library.  Other duties will include participation in all activities of the cataloging unit, such as original and complex copy cataloging, database maintenance, and other projects as needed.

Qualifications:  Required: ALA-accredited MLS.  Experience cataloging electronic and print resources.   Knowledge of AACR2, MARC, LCRI, LCSH, LC classification, OCLC and integrated library systems.  Ability to work independently and as a team member, with excellent interpersonal skills. Preferred:  Cataloging experience in an academic library setting, experience with the Sirsi/Dynix integrated library system, knowledge of metadata and emerging bibliographic standards.

The University of Central Florida Libraries is seeking an innovative and experienced leader to facilitate the identification and implementation of best practices in acquisitions, cataloging, and collection management. The successful candidate should have significant experience with one or more of these areas as well as strategic planning, project management, process analysis and integrated library management systems. The position requires strong analytical and decision making skills, an orientation toward new and developing practices, and an ability to achieve concrete results by motivating and empowering staff and colleagues. As a member of senior management this Associate Director reports to the Director of Libraries and plays a leadership role in library-wide planning, policy making, and development and evaluation of services.

Responsibilities: Plans and leads implementation of traditional, digital, and future services in acquisitions, cataloging and metadata, serials management, electronic resources licensing, and collection management; enhances service quality and operational efficiency; leads two department heads, nine faculty librarians, and twenty support staff; fosters effective working relationships with all constituents; contributes to system-wide planning and policy making; represents the Libraries in a wide range of consortia and partnerships at the state, regional, and national levels.

Qualifications: Required: Masters degree from an ALA-Accredited institution and a minimum of five years post-MLS experience managing or supervising in an academic library. Preferred: knowledge of and substantial operational experience in technical services, collections, and budgeting; knowledge of appropriate information technology applications such as Ex Libris, (ALEPH, SFX, MetaLib); knowledge of collections and technical services automation, issues, and trends; substantial academic library experience in progressively more responsible positions; experience administering a major unit within a research library; demonstrated ability to effect change; supervisory experience and a management style that empowers others; ability to work well with a diverse community in a collegial manner; strong analytical and decision-making skills; experience with programming related to library management systems; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to represent the Libraries within the University and to external audiences at the state, regional, and national levels; record of scholarship and professional activities.

Environment: The University of Central Florida is the nations 6th largest university, enrolling over 49,000 students and offering 95 bachelors, 97 masters, and 28 doctoral programs. JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the overall management and collection development of the Price Library of Judaica. Collaborates with librarians and the academic faculty to establish collection management policies. Assigns, trains, monitors, and evaluates staff assigned to the Price Library of Judaica. Participates in the Library’s publications, fund raising, and bibliographical control programs. The library encourages staff participation in reaching management decisions and, consequently, the head of the Price Library of Judaica may be asked to serve on various departmental and library-wide committees and teams. The incumbent will pursue professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
As the bibliographer for Jewish Studies, maintains and integrates the following responsibilities:
• Maintains contact with the faculty and students utilizing the Price Library of Judaica to ensure that the collections and services provided by the Library support needs. Informs this clientele of relevant library issues.
• Develops collection management policy and approval plans for the Price Library of Judaica. Stays informed of relevant Jewish Studies resources available in other libraries and collections.
• Reviews notification slips, trade and national bibliographies, advertisements, catalogues, and similar sources so as to initiate current and retrospective acquisition orders in all formats enhancing the Judaica collections in support of the academic program. Selects appropriate materials received by gift; reviews approval plan profiles and receipts for Judaica, and advises the Acquisitions and Licensing Dept. on sources of supply.
• Works with the library Gifts and Exchange programs to solicit and review gift collections and to establish exchange programs for Jewish Studies.
• Establishes cataloging and preservation priorities for Judaica materials. Makes storage, transfer, and deselection decisions for Judaica materials.
• Participates in the reformatting and digitization programs to ensure conversion of important items in jeopardy.
• Assists the Cataloging and Metadata Dept. in the copy cataloging of Hebraica and selection of materials for outsourcing of cataloging services.
• Provides consultative services to the faculty and advanced graduate students in Jewish Studies, usually by referral from public service areas or by specific arrangement with the academic program area faculty.
• Develops and maintains a professional relationship with other Judaica bibliographers, providing leadership at the national level in various organizations.
• Participates in the Special and Area Studies Collections departmental strategic planning process.
• Prepares collection assessment studies and defines resource needs.
• Participates in the Library’s development program.
• Participates in the Library’s exhibition program.
• Participates in the Library’s research and publication program.
• Serves on Library and departmental consultative bodies as appropriate.
• Pursues professional development opportunities, including research, publication, and professional association activities, to meet library-wide criteria for tenure and promotion.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
• Thorough knowledge of one Jewish language and a working knowledge of one additional Jewish language
• Strong familiarity with Jewish history and culture

• A minimum of three (3) years experience in an academic or research library, with experience in managing and enhancing library collections, including those supporting Jewish Studies or other relevant and equivalent professional experience
• Effective oral and written communication skills in English
• Familiarity with information and digital-based technologies and automated library systems
• Strong potential for meeting the requirements for tenure and promotion.

Preferred:
• Earned graduate degree in a relevant subject field with a thorough knowledge of the research literature of Jewish Studies
• A demonstrated record of bibliographic instruction, scholarship, public outreach, and development
• Working knowledge of two modern European languages
• Working knowledge of a Semitic language other than Hebrew
• Experience as a catalog librarian in an automated environment
• Experience in an academic library that awards tenure to librarians
• Demonstrated supervisory experience

Special and Area Studies Collections encompasses two units: the Area Studies Collections and the Special Collections of the University of Florida. The Area Studies Collections are the Latin American Collection; the Africana and the Asian Studies collections; and the Price Library of Judaica. The Price Library of Judaica is a well-balanced Jewish studies collection of notable depth and scope. Its diversified holdings of uncommon research materials in English and other languages support scholarship in virtually every aspect of the Jewish experience. Materials relevant to the ancient, medieval and modern periods await advanced students, visiting scholars and casual readers who possess a curiosity about a creative people with 4,000 years of recorded history.

JOB SUMMARY: The George A. Smathers Libraries Administrative Office is recruiting for the position of Program Assistant. This position is one of three staff members in the George A. Smathers Libraries Administrative Suite. The primary purpose of this position is to provide administrative and secretarial/clerical support for the Libraries Senior Management.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Answers and distributes telephone calls, receives and distributes mail, composes and types routine office correspondences and items requiring action, makes copies, files and provides other general office duties as required. Updates Public Services handouts on an as needed basis. Processes travel authorizations and travel expense reports on an as needed basis. Maintains office supplies budget and orders/distributes office supplies for Administration.
• Assists with the collection, collation, and management of the library’s statistics program.
• Records, formats, and distributes meeting minutes as requested by the dean/directors.
• Assumes responsibility for the appropriate section of the library Web pages, including editing, updating, and adding content as required.
• Provides support on an as needed basis to the Development Office and the Grants Office.
• In coordination with Executive Secretary develops and maintains Procedures Guidebook for all job functions.
• Participates in staff development training activities as required to broaden and improve skills and to become familiar with technological innovations within the libraries.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum qualifications: A high school diploma and four years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Ability to type letters, memoranda, reports, standard office forms in correct format.
• Ability to compose office correspondence.
• Knowledge of techniques for using automated equipment (including computers, fax machines, copiers, scanners) and major software packages, e.g., word processing, desktop publishing, web page software, graphics and spreadsheet applications, electronic mail, etc.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive matters.
• Knowledge of techniques for interacting effectively in person and on the telephone.
• Knowledge of correct spelling, punctuation, grammar usage, and business math.
